Hawaii Tattoo Expo 2024– Documentary Portrait Series
Project Type
Run-and-Gun Style Photography
Date
August 2024
Location
Neal S. Blaisdell Center, Honolulu, Hawaii
This series turned into a raw, instinctive dive into documentary portraiture. Being an official sponsor of the 2024 Hawaii Tattoo Expo was a big personal milestone. As an artist and machine builder, it meant a lot to give back to a culture and community that’s shaped so much of my work. Having a media pass let me move freely through the event, capturing moments as they happened.
I took a spontaneous, almost shotgun-style approach, moving through the crowd, drawn to different tattoo styles, the energy in the room, and even just the sound of the machines. I rarely use the viewfinder, usually shooting from waist level. Most of the time it doesn’t even look like I’m taking a photo. It’s an unorthodox way of working, but it lets people stay in the moment, and I’m able to capture them as they really are.
This work comes from a real love for tattoo culture...capturing honest, unscripted moments within a creative community built on passion, respect, and unity. Documenting the Hawaii Tattoo Expo wasn’t just about taking photos. It was about honoring a culture that welcomes you like family. These portraits are my way of sharing that experience...the artistry, the energy, and the deep respect that brings this global ohana together.
